There is an opinion, confirmed by observations that Russians smile much less than people of other nations like both Europe and Asia.

Researchers attribute it to the Russian mentality and list a number of reasons. They say that for Russians it is not acceptable to smile at strangers, that a smile in communication is not a sign of politeness, that it is not acceptable to smile at a person if your eyes meet by chance. A smile for Russians is a sign of personal disposition to the person. The Russian smile is meant to be only sincere; it is regarded as a sincere expression of good mood or disposition towards the interlocutor.

However, not smiling in everyday life, Russian people are mostly happy, lively and witty.

Times are changing and we can see that new generations of young Russians smiles more often and willingly. It would be nice if sometime in the future Russians became associated with their wide and joyous smile.
