How many senses do humans have?

This is the second lesson of our new Russian excercises series where we develop your skills of audio comprehension and question answering.

Listen to the short story and try to understand it by ear. After that you will be asked a few questions about what you have heard. We put a pause after each question so you could work out your answer. The more complete and detailed answers you give the better your Russian skills are developing. In the end we’ll repeat all the questions and give you the answers.

Remember that there are several ways to answer these questions, the answers we give you are just possible examples.

Today we are talking about five senses of human body. Or more than five? Listen to the story and learn more.

Everyone knows the five human senses: sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. But today, scientists supplemented the list of at least four more:

1. Feeling the heat (or its lack) on our skin. This feeling is called thermoreception.

2. A sense of balance (due to contained in the cavities of the inner ear fluids) – equibrioception.

3. Nociception – a perception of pain by skin, joints and organs of the body, which, incidentally, does not include the brain, as it has not susceptible to the pain receptors.

4. A very interesting feeling – the realization of your own body, called proprioception. This is understanding of where the parts of our body are, even if we do not feel or see them.

But debates don’t finish here. Some people are inclined to extend this list up to 21 senses, including there hunger, thirst, a sense of depth, sensitivity to electricity or even a sense of danger and intuition (often called the sixth sense).

And how do you find synesthesia, where senses are intertwined, or replaced by other ones, so that one begins to see the music or vice versa, to hear the visuals?

And then there are some feelings that animals have and people haven’t. For example, birds and insects can sense magnetic fields which allows them to navigate. Fish use echolocation for the same purpose. Deers (there is no need to add ‘s’ to deer to make it plural. It is singular and plural. Exapmle: I saw many deer. There were 50 deer in the field.) and owls have infrared vision to hunt at night.
