Most of the inhabitants of Russia profess one religion – Orthodox Christianity – which was adopted back in ancient Russia. The baptism of Rus happened in 988, and it is associated with the name of Prince Vladimir of Kiev. It was him who, in those immemorial times, decided which religion the people inhabiting the Ancient Rus should profess.

Christian faith came to Russia from Byzantium, which at that time was a strong and powerful state. Ancient Rus at different times both traded with Byzantium and fought with it, and at the same time wanted to consolidate those various ties that already then arose between the countries. This could be facilitated by the adoption of the Orthodoxy – the main Byzantine religion. Moreover, many Russian merchants who traveled to Byzantium with goods, and Russian soldiers who went on campaigns to Constantinople, were baptized there and returned back being Orthodox Christians. For Byzantium itself was important that it was its religion that spread among other countries and peoples.

It is said in ancient chronicles that imamometans, Jews and Catholics came to Prince Vladimir to tell him how good their faith is and to persuade him to their side. Prince Vladimir listened attentively to everyone and sent them back.

But here came to Prince Vladimir an unnamed philosopher, whom the Greeks had sent, and told the prince about the Bible, about how God created the earth, and in conclusion showed him the picture of the Last Judgment depicting the righteous going to Paradise, and the sinners condemned to eternal torment. Struck by this spectacle, Vladimir sighed and said: “Blessing to good ones and grief to evil ones”. “Get baptized,” the philosopher answered him, “and you will be in paradise with the first!”.

Vladimir let the philosopher go with gifts and great honor, and gathered the boyars and the city elders, told them about the proposals of the Mohammedans, Jews, Catholics and Orthodox and asked them for advice on which faith it is better to take Rus. “Sire,” said the boyars and the elders, “every man praises his own belief: if you want to choose the best one, then send intelligent people to different lands to experience which people worship their god better”. The Grand Duke listened to the elders and sent 10 sensible men to different countries, and after a while they all returned and told the prince: “Everyone who tastes sweet is already disgusted with bitter, so we, after learning the faith of the Greeks, do not want another one”.

This is what the historical chronicles write about this and point out that at first he Grand Duke Vladimir himself and the boyars close to him were baptized in Khersonb, and then in the summer of 988 he baptized his people in the Dnieper waters.
