Expressing disagreement

The topic of today’s lesson is how to express disagreement in Russian. We’ve collected some phrases for you that can be both independent expressions and parts of whole sentences.

Some simple examples are going to help you memorize the expressions and see their use at the same time. We also provide your with the translation of each phrase which in many cases is not literal but rather close to the meaning.

We recommend you to listen to the audio of this lesson as many times as you need till all the words and phrases sound natural.

быть про́тив – to be against

– Я про́тив тако́го реше́ния.
– I am against such a decision.

– Е́сли вы то́же про́тив нововведе́ний, запо́лните э́ту фо́рму и проголосу́йте.
– If you too are against innovations, please fill up the form and (cast your) vote.

Я э́тому не ве́рю. – I don’t believe it.

– Я не ве́рю ни одному́ его́ сло́ву.
– I don’t believe a word he says.

Коне́чно, нет. – Certainly not.

– Ты собира́ешься вы́кинуть пса на у́лицу за то, что он съел твои́ боти́нки?
– Коне́чно, нет. Но его́ определённо на́до проучи́ть.
– Are you going to throw the dog out just because he chewed up your shoes?
– Of course not. But it certainly should be taught a lesson.

Ты ошиба́ешься. – You’re mistaken.

(Бою́сь,) ты неправ. – (I’m afraid) you’re wrong.

Я не ду́маю, что ты прав. – I don’t think you’re right.

Я так не ду́маю. – I don’t think so.

– Я не ду́маю, что э́то хоро́шая иде́я.
– I don’t think it is a good idea.

– Мне ка́жется, бы́ло бы непло́хо сде́лать так, как предлага́ет Анто́н.
– Не ду́маю.
– I think it’s not such a bad idea to do what Anton suggests.
– I don’t think so.

Ни в ко́ем слу́чае. – That’s impossible!

– Э́того нельзя́ допуска́ть ни в ко́ем слу́чае!
– This can not be allowed under any circumstances!

Ни за что! – No way! Not at any price!

– Никогда́ и ни за что не соглашу́сь с э́той то́чкой зре́ния.
– I will never ever agree with this point of view.

– Ты пое́дешь с на́ми?
– Да ни за что на све́те!
– Are you coming with us?
– Like hell I will!

Не мо́жет быть. – It can not be.

– Не мо́жет быть, что́бы всё бы́ло так про́сто.
– It cannot be that simple.

Всё не так про́сто. – There is more to it than that.

– Всё не так про́сто, как вы ду́маете. Есть не́сколько подво́дных камне́й.
– Everything is not as simple as it seems. There are a few pitfalls.

пробле́ма в том, что … – the problem is that …

– Позвони́те им и спроси́те, как поступи́ть.
– Пробле́ма в том, что у нас нет с ни́ми свя́зи.
– Call them up and ask what to do.
– The problem is that we have no contacts with them.

вряд ли – unlikely, hardly

– Вряд ли они́ приду́т.
– It is highly unlikely that they will come.

– Мы ду́маем, э́тот прое́кт бу́дет успе́шным.
– Вряд ли. Вы упуска́ете из ви́ду не́сколько ва́жных дета́лей.
– We think this project will be successful.
– I doubt it. You are overlooking some important details.

едва́ ли – hardly, scarcely

– Они́ полага́ют, что успе́ют всё сде́лать за два дня. Но едва́ ли э́то так.
– They believe they will be able to finish everything within two days. But it is hardly likely.

Совсе́м не так! Далеко́ не так. – Far from it!

Всё как раз наоборо́т. – It’s just the other way around.

Об э́том не мо́жет быть и ре́чи! – It’s out of the question!

– О поку́пке ещё одно́й маши́ны не мо́жет быть и ре́чи, мы едва́ отдали́ креди́т за пе́рвую.
– Buying another car is absolutely out of question. We’ve barely paid off our loan on the first one.

Отню́дь нет. Ниско́лько. – Not at all.

– Вы, ка́жется, счита́ете меня́ идио́том.
– Отню́дь. Ва́ши рассужде́ния вполне́ логи́чны и убеди́тельны.
– You seem to think I am an idiot.
– Not at all. Your reasoning is quite logical and convincing.

Я бы не сказа́л. – I shouldn’t say so.

– Они́ вы́глядят зна́ющими своё де́ло.
– Я бы так не сказа́ла. Они́ допусти́ли не́сколько серьёзных оши́бок в расчётах.
– They look like they know their business.
– I wouldn’t say that. They have made some serious mistakes in their calculations.

Ничего́ подо́бного! – Nothing of the kind!

– Говоря́т, вы собира́етесь прода́ть свой би́знес?
– Ничего́ подо́бного! Кто вам э́то сказа́л?
– I’ve heard you are going to sell off your business.
– Not at all. Who told you that?

Как бы не так! – Not likely!

– Вы ду́маете, что предусмотре́ли ка́ждую ме́лочь и всё пройдёт по пла́ну? Как бы не так! В таки́х мероприя́тиях форс-мажо́ры неизбе́жны.
– Do you think you have gone over every detail and that everything will go as per the plan? Highly unlikely! Force majeurs are inevitable at such events.
