Face expressions

Today we have a very interesting topic – we are going to describe people’s face expressions. This lessons contains quite advanced vocabulary, but we’ve prepared some images to help you to memorize it all.

So, let’s get it started!

ухмыляться / ухмыльнуться

ухмыля́ться / ухмыльну́ться –
to smirk, to grin

Выслушав весь этот бред, Саша ехидно ухмыльнулся, но ничего не сказал.
Having heard all the nonsense, Sasha grinned maliciously, but said nothing.

Он ухмылялся во весь рот и смотрел мне в глаза.
He grinned from ear to ear and looked into my eyes.

морщить нос

мо́рщить нос / намо́рщиться –
to knit one’s brow, to wrinkle one’s nose, to screw up one’s face

Мода на тюнинг набирает обороты, да так, что те, кто еще вчера морщил нос при этом слове, сегодня уже советуются с друзьями, подыскивая какую-нибудь современную систему для своего автомобиля.
The fashion for tuning cars (hotroding) is gaining momentum so much so that those who yesterday wrinkled their noses at the very word, today are consulting friends trying to find some modern system for their cars.

Дима поморщился, жестом давая понять, что не стоит волноваться.
Dima grimaced wildly, that there was no need to worry.

to stare, to goggle

The man stared, clearly not understanding what it was all about.

закати́ть глаза́ –
to roll up one’s eyes

Тетушка мечтательно закатила глаза и томно вздохнула, погрузившись в воспоминания.
Aunty dreamily rolled her eyes and sighed wearily, lost in her memories.

Елена закатила глаза, ненавидя себя за то, что согласилась на этот эксперимент.
Elena rolled her eyes, hating herself for agreeing to this experiment.

скриви́ться – to pull a face

Костя так скривился, будто проглотил целый лимон.
Kostya made a face like he had swallowed a whole lemon.

Настя скривилась от отвращения.
Nastya grimaced in disgust.

прищу́рить глаза́ / прищу́риться –
to screw up ones eyes

Карина присела на корточки передо мной и недоверчиво прищурилась.
Kareena knelt in front of me and squinted at me suspiciously.

Кутузов долго внимательно поглядел на этих двух солдат; еще более сморщившись, он прищурил глаза и раздумчиво покачал головой. (Война и Мир, Лев Толстой)

насу́питься –
to frown, to scowl

Он поглядел вокруг, насупился, чертыхнулся шепотом.
He looked around and frowned, cursing under his breath.

Она насупилась, и в больших глазах ее сверкнули досада и презрение.
She frowned, and her big eyes flashed with annoyance and contempt.

рази́нуть рот –
to open wide one’s mouth

Все застыли, разинув рот, в ожидании продолжения.
Everyone froze, open-mouthed, expecting more.

Что разинул рот? Ничего удивительного здесь нет.
Why are you open-mouthed? There’s nothing surprising here.

ко́рчить ро́жу / грима́сничать –
to make / pull faces, to grimace

На уроках он ничего не делал, корчил рожи ученикам и бил по крышке парты.
He didn’t do anything during class, he only made faces at the students and drummed on the desk tops.

Человек так превосходно гримасничал, что даже обезьяна пришла в замешательство.
The man grimaced so well that even the monkey got embarrassed.

отвести́ взгляд / поту́питься –
to look down, to cast down one’s eyes, to drop one’s eyes

Она не фыркнула, не обиделась, а только отвела глаза и поджала губы.
She did not snicker, did not take offence, but just looked away and pursed her lips.

Костя потупился и покраснел, и я заподозрил неладное.
Kostya looked down and blushed, and I suspected something was wrong.

смотре́ть свысока́ –
to look down (upon somebody)

Никто так хорошо, как кошка, не умеет смотреть свысока на тех, кто выше.
No one can look down on those above as well as a cat.

На наши жалобы он посмотрел свысока и пошел дальше по своим делам.
He looked down upon our complaints and went on his business.

втяну́ть ще́ки –
to suck in one’s cheeks

Чтобы более точно определить скулы при макияже, нужно втянуть щеки.
To define cheekbones more precisely while doing makeup, pull in your cheekbones.

Сделайте вдох через нос, втянув щёки.
Inhale through the nose, pulling in your cheeks.
