Visiting a doctor

We’ve already covered a bit of health related vocabulary in one of our previous lessons. In today’s lesson we have a few dialogues that might happen at the hospital or when visiting a doctor. The dialogues include a lot of useful vocabulary describing the way one might feel, typical medical phrases and prescriptions.

The lesson is intended for the intermediate Russian learners.

Dialogue 1 – Stomach pain

– Здра́вствуйте, на что жа́луетесь?
– Hello, what seems to be a problem? (What are you complaining about?)

– Со вчера́шнего дня у меня́ си́льно боли́т живо́т.
– I have a strong pain in my stomach since yesterday.

– В како́м ме́сте боль?
– Where is the pain?

– Вот здесь, в ни́жней ча́сти живота́.
– Right here, in the lower abdomen.

– Есть ещё каки́е-нибу́дь симпто́мы? Температу́ра, тошнота́?
– Any other symptoms? Fever, nausea?

– Да, меня́ тошни́ло па́ру раз, температу́ры вро́де нет, но я не уве́рен.
– Yes, I vomited a couple of times, there is no fever, but I’m not sure.

– Похо́же на аппендици́т. Ложи́тесь на куше́тку, я вас осмотрю́.
– It looks like appendicitis. Lie down on the couch, I’ll examine you.

Dialogue 2 – Cough and sore throat

– До́брый день. Чем могу́ помо́чь?
– Good afternoon. How can I help you?

– У меня́ си́льный ка́шель и боли́т го́рло.
– I have a strong cough and sore throat.

– Температу́ра есть?
– Do you have fever?

– Небольша́я, 37-37.5.
– Small fever, 37-37.5.

– Откро́йте рот и высуньте язы́к… Так, я пропишу́ вам антибио́тики. Вот реце́пт. Принима́йте по 2 табле́тки три ра́за в день по́сле еды́. И постара́йтесь соблюда́ть посте́льный режи́м.
– Open your mouth and stick your tongue out… Alright, I’ll prescribe antibiotics to you. Here is the prescription. Take 2 pills three times a day after meals. And try to stay in bed.

Dialogue 3 – Fainting

– Что с ва́ми?
– What’s wrong with you?

– Мне не хорошо́. Ка́жется, я сейча́с потеря́ю созна́ние.
– I do not feel well. I think I’m going to faint now.

– Ся́дьте. Мо́жет быть, вы́звать ско́рую?
– Sit down. Maybe call an ambulance?

– Ду́маю, обойдётся. Не на́до.
– I think it will go away. Don’t.

– Я принесу́ вам воды́.
– I’ll get you some water.

– Спаси́бо.
– Thank you.

Dialogue 4 – Bone fracture

– До́ктор, у меня́ си́льно боли́т рука́.
– Doctor, my arm hurts badly.

– В како́м ме́сте?
– Where exactly?

– Запя́стье. Мне бо́льно да́же при мале́йшем движе́нии.
– The wrist. It hurts even with the slightest movement.

– Вы па́дали, ударя́лись?
– Have you fallen, hit youfself?

– Да, вчера́ я упа́ла с ле́стницы и приземли́лась пря́мо на э́ту ру́ку.
– Yes, yesterday I fell down the stairs and landed directly on that arm.

– У вас мо́жет быть перело́м.
– You might have a fracture.

– Да́же перело́м?
– Even a fracture?

– Да, дава́йте сде́лаем рентге́н и узна́ем.
– Yes, let’s do an x-ray and find out.
