This is a new Russian vocabulary lesson and today we are learning some useful expressions with the word “time”. Listen to the audio to practice the pronunciation of all these phrases and memorize them better.
вре́мя от вре́мени – from time to time
Вре́мя от вре́мени она́ сади́тся на стро́гую дие́ту.
From time to time, she is on a strict diet.
до поры́ до вре́мени – until a certain time
Он мог не обраща́ть никако́го внима́ния на окружа́ющий барда́к, но то́лько до поры́ до вре́мени. Пото́м его́ терпе́ние иссяка́ло.
He could not pay any attention to the surrounding mess, but only for the time being. After that his patience dried up.
со вре́менем — in time, in due course, eventually
Снача́ла все ворча́ли по по́воду измене́ний, но как обы́чно, со вре́менем по́няли, что так лу́чше.
At first, everyone grumbled about the changes, but as usual, eventually realized that it was for the better.
тем вре́менем — meanwhile, in the meantime
Ты пока́ прибери́сь тут, а я тем вре́менем схожу́ за проду́ктами.
You clean up here for now, and in the meantime I’ll go do the groceries.
вре́мя (де́лать что-ли́бо) – it’s time to
Мы засиде́лись, вре́мя уходи́ть. Ско́ро по́езд.
We’ve been sitting for too long, it’s time to leave. The train is soon.
сейча́с не вре́мя – it is not the time to
Сейча́с не вре́мя выясня́ть кто винова́т. Дава́йте реша́ть что де́лать.
Now is not the time to find out who is to blame. Let’s decide what to do.
са́мое вре́мя – just the (right) time (for)
Са́мое вре́мя подкрепи́ться, вам не ка́жется?
It’s time to have a bite, don’t you think?
с незапа́мятных времён – from time immemorial, time out of mind
С незапа́мятных времён пова́ренная соль игра́ла огро́мную роль в разви́тии челове́чества, в том числе́ в торго́вле, поли́тике и культу́ре.
Since time immemorial, table salt has played a huge role in the development of mankind, including trade, politics and culture.
вре́мя те́рпит – there is no hurry, there’s plenty of time
Дава́йте не бу́дем торопи́ться с приня́тием реше́ния, вре́мя те́рпит.
Let’s not rush to make a decision, we can wait a bit.
вре́мя не ждёт – time presses, there is no time to be lost
Хва́тит болта́ть, вре́мя не ждёт. Займи́тесь де́лом, на́до зако́нчить проект в срок.
Enough talking, time does not wait. Make yourself busy, we need to finish the project on time.
вре́мя пока́жет – time will show
Не бу́дем спо́рить. Вре́мя пока́жет кто из нас был прав.
Let’s not argue. Time will show which one of us was right.
всему́ своё вре́мя – there is a time for everything, everything is good in its season
Не торопи́ собы́тия, всему́ своё вре́мя.
Do not rush things, everything has its time.
идти́ в но́гу со вре́менем – keep pace with the times
Поли́тики то́же стара́ются идти́ в но́гу со вре́менем и заво́дят себе́ акка́унты на Фэйсбуке и Тви́ттере.
Politicians also try to keep up with the times and get themselves accounts on Facebook and Twitter.
скорота́ть вре́мя – while away the time
Возьми́ с собо́й кни́жку скорота́ть вре́мя, ждать придётся до́лго.
Take a book with you to pass the time, it’s a long time to wait.
не теря́я вре́мени – without wasting time
Сра́зу по возвраще́нии из турне́ музыка́нты, не теря́я вре́мени, при́нялись за рабо́ту над сле́дующим альбо́мом.
Immediately upon returning from the tour, the musicians, without losing any time, began working on the next album.
вы́играть вре́мя – to gain time
На́до сде́лать что́-то отвлека́ющее внима́ние. Э́то помо́жет нам вы́играть вре́мя, пока́ остальны́е бу́дут разбира́ться что произошло́.
We have to do something distracting. This will help us gain time while the others will be figuring out what happened.
упуска́ть вре́мя – to miss time
Когда́ он всё-таки собра́лся с си́лами осуществи́ть заду́манное, вре́мя бы́ло уже́ упу́щено.
When he finally got ready to carry out his plans, time was already lost.
вы́ждать вре́мя – to bide one’s time
Специали́сты в таки́х слу́чаях сове́туют не принима́ть поспе́шных реше́ний, а вы́ждать вре́мя.
In such cases experts advise not to take hasty decisions, but wait for some time.
тра́тить вре́мя – to waste time
Жизнь така́я коро́ткая, а вы тра́тите вре́мя на пусты́е ссо́ры!
Life is so short, and you waste your time quarreling!
убива́ть вре́мя – to kill time
Вме́сто того́, что́бы учи́ться, он убива́ет вре́мя за компью́терными и́грами и́ли в ча́те с друзья́ми.
Instead of studying, he kills time playing computer games or chatting with friends.

to kill time = to try to do somenthing while waiting (waiting for the delayed train I killed time by reading an old magazine)
I think a closer translation could be:
убивать время = laze about, loaf around

Убивать время also means to get yourself busy with something while waiting. I think it’s the same meaning in English as in Russian. Example:
– У нас два часа до поезда, как будем убивать время?
– We have two hours before the train, how are we going to kill the time?
