We hope that this information, firstly, will make you smile, and secondly, will help you with your trip to Russia or with your Russian friends or colleagues.

Вопреки́ о́бщему впечатле́нию, ру́сские не хму́рые и не гру́бые, и уж тем бо́лее не злы́е. Про́сто в Росси́и не при́нято улыба́ться посторо́нним лю́дям.
Contrary to the general impression, Russians are not gloomy and rough, and certainly not evil. It’s just that in Russia it’s not common to smile at strangers.
Ру́сские практи́чески не говоря́т по-англи́йски (хотя́ молодо́е поколе́ние справля́ется лу́чше), одна́ко они́ всегда́ ра́ды пообща́ться с иностра́нцами. Осо́бенно им нра́вится учи́ть их своему́ языку́.
Russians hardly speak English (although the younger generation cope better), but they are always glad to communicate with foreigners. They especially like to teach them their language.
Е́сли вас пригласи́ли в го́сти, не плани́руйте ничего́ на ве́чер. Вы там бу́дете до́лго. Счита́йте, что вы при́няты в ру́сское о́бщество, е́сли вы сиди́те по́здним ве́чером на ру́сской ку́хне с едо́й и алкого́лем и филосо́фствуете. Будьте гото́вы к бо́лее дли́тельным и глубо́ким ли́чным бесе́дам.
If you are invited to somebody’s house, do not plan anything for the evening. You will be there for a long time. Consider that you are accepted in Russian society, if you are sitting late at night in a Russian kitchen with food, and philosophizing. Be prepared for long and deep personal conversations.
Е́сли вы пришли́ в го́сти, вам придётся снять о́бувь и наде́ть та́почки. Е́сли вам их не предложи́ли, возмо́жно, э́то дурно́й знак.
If you came to somebody’s house, you will have to take off your shoes and put on the “tapochkee”. If you are not offered the “tapochkee”, maybe it’s a bad sign.
Е́сли вас пригласи́ли в го́сти, приноси́те с собо́й конфе́ты, цветы́ и́ли буты́лку алкого́ля. Никогда́ не отка́зывайтесь от приглаше́ния в го́сти и́ли на да́чу. И́менно в гостя́х вы по-настоя́щему узнаёте люде́й.
If you are invited to somebody’s house, bring with you some chocolates, flowers or a bottle of alcohol. Never refuse an invitation to visit people in their house or at the “dacha”. You really get to know people while visiting them in their house.
Настоя́щий ру́сский выезжа́ет на да́чу (ле́тний дом). Карто́шка и о́вощи сажа́ются и полива́ются. Мужчи́ны гото́вят «шашлы́к», же́нщины – сала́ты. В после́днее вре́мя лю́ди стро́ят да́чи на кру́глый год, но ча́сто се́мьи е́дут на да́чу то́лько на ле́то.
Real Russians go to the dacha (summer cottage). Potatoes and vegetables are planted and watered. Men prepare “barbecue”, and women make salads. In recent years, people build cottages for all year round, but often families go to the dacha only for the summer.
Когда́ да́рите цветы́, дари́те нечётное их коли́чество. Чётное коли́чество цвето́в ру́сские но́сят на кла́дбища.
When giving flowers, give an odd number of them. An even number of flowers is only brought to the cemetery by Russians.
Ма́ло рабо́ты де́лается во второ́й полови́не декабря́, пе́рвой полови́не января́ и в пе́рвой полови́не ма́я, во вре́мя пра́здников. Зара́нее составля́йте расписа́ние, зна́я, что мно́гие в э́ти дни не на рабо́те. Э́то ху́дшее вре́мя для плани́рования встреч.
A little work is done in the second half of December, the first half of January, and the first half of May, during the holidays. Organize your schedule knowing that many of these days are holidays. This is the worst time to schedule appointments.
По́мните о 8 ма́рта, Междунаро́дном же́нском дне. Е́сли вы рабо́таете в Росси́и и́ли в кома́нде с ру́сскими, не забыва́йте дари́ть же́нщинам пода́рки и поздравля́ть в э́тот день.
Remember about 8 of March, International Women’s Day. If you are working in Russia or with a Russian team, do not forget to give gifts or flowers to women and congratulate them on this day.
