In Russia, Christmas is celebrated differently from the other Christian countries. Catholic Christmas falls on 25th December, but the Orthodox on 7th January. This is due to the fact that the Russian Church follows the Julian Calendar and the Catholic church – the Gregorian.

During the Soviet regime Christmas was banned and the traditions associated with its celebration were forgotten. After the fall of the Regime the ban was lifted. But even in present times, when more and more people are becoming involved in the faith and understanding the significance of Christmas, the New Year continues to be a more significant and most awaited festival than Christmas for Russians.
