Things are not as they seem… That is the main moral of the parable we reading in today’s lesson for the intermediate level. The author of the parable is unknown.

Два а́нгела-пу́тника останови́лись на ночле́г в до́ме бога́той семьи́. Семья́ была́ негостеприи́мна и не захоте́ла оста́вить а́нгелов в гости́ной. Вме́сто того́ они́ бы́ли уло́жены на ночле́г в холо́дном подва́ле. Когда́ они́ расстила́ли посте́ль, ста́рший а́нгел уви́дел дыру́ в стене́ и заде́лал её. Когда́ мла́дший а́нгел уви́дел э́то, то спроси́л, для чего́. Ста́рший отве́тил:
Two travelling angels stopped for the night in the house of a wealthy family. The family was inhospitable and did not want to leave the angels in the living room. Instead, they were placed overnight in the cold basement. When they were making the bed, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and sealed it. When the younger angel saw it, he asked why. The senior said:
— Ве́щи не таки́е, каки́ми ка́жутся.
– Things are not as they seem.
На сле́дующую ночь они́ пришли́ на ночле́г в дом о́чень бе́дного, но гостеприи́много челове́ка и его́ жены́. Супру́ги раздели́ли с а́нгелами немно́го еды́, кото́рая у них была́, и сказа́ли, что́бы а́нгелы спа́ли в их посте́лях, где́ они мо́гут хорошо́ вы́спаться. У́тром по́сле пробужде́ния а́нгелы нашли́ хозя́ина и его́ жену́ пла́чущими. Их еди́нственная коро́ва, молоко́ кото́рой бы́ло еди́нственным дохо́дом семьи́, лежа́ла мёртвая. Мла́дший а́нгел спроси́л ста́ршего:
The next night they came for the night in the house of a very poor, but hospitable man and his wife. The couple shared with the angels little food that they had, and told the angels to sleep in their bed where they can sleep well. In the morning after waking up the angels found the owner and his wife crying. Their only cow, whose milk was the only family income, was laying dead. The younger angel asked the elder one:
— Как э́то могло́ случи́ться? Пе́рвый мужчи́на име́л всё, а ты ему́ помо́г. Друга́я семья́ име́ла о́чень ма́ло, но была́ гото́ва подели́ться всем, а ты позво́лил, что́бы у них умерла еди́нственная коро́ва. Почему́?
– How could this happen? The first man had everything, and you helped him. Another family had little but was willing to share everything, and you’re allowed their only cow to die. Why is that?
— Ве́щи не таки́е, каки́ми ка́жутся, — отве́тил ста́рший а́нгел. Когда́ мы бы́ли в подва́ле, я по́нял, что в дыре́ в стене́ был клад с зо́лотом. Его́ хозя́ин был груб и не хоте́л сде́лать добро́. Я отремонти́ровал сте́ну, что́бы клад не́ был на́йден. Когда́ на сле́дующую ночь мы спа́ли в посте́ли, пришёл а́нгел сме́рти за жено́й хозя́ина. Я отда́л ему́ коро́ву. Ве́щи не таки́е, каки́ми ка́жутся. Мы никогда́ не зна́ем всё.
– Things are not as they seem – said the senior angel. When we were in the basement, I realized that the hole in the wall was a treasure of gold. Its owner was rude and did not want to do good. I repaired the wall so the treasure couldn’t be found. When the next night we slept in a bed, the angel of death came for the wife. I gave him the cow. Things are not as they seem. We never know everything.
