Быть начеку

to be on the alert, to be on one’s guard, to keep alert

  1. Э́тот слу́чай пока́зывает необходи́мость быть начеку́ пе́ред лицо́м угро́зы экстреми́зма внутри́ со́бственной страны́.
    This case shows the need to be on the alert in the face of the threat of extremism within one’s own country.
  2. Воды́ в э́том году́ ма́ло, несмотря́ на оби́лие сне́га, и уже́ сейча́с лес сухо́й. Так что ну́жно быть начеку́ и рабо́тать на предотвраще́ние пожа́ров.
    Water this year is small, despite the abundance of snow, and the forest is already dry. So we need to be alert and work to prevent fires.
  3. Шпио́ну необходи́мо постоя́нно быть начеку́ – и во вре́мя бо́дрствования, и во сне. Глаза́, у́ши, мозг и интелле́кт явля́ются надёжными инструме́нтами, да́же ору́жием хоро́шего шпио́на.
    A spy needs to be constantly on guard both during wakefulness and sleep. Eyes, ears, brain and intellect are reliable tools, even weapons of a good spy.
