In today’s Russian vocabulary lesson we are looking at the ways to express your opinion or to make a suggestion in Russian. We’ve collected few words and phrases that can help you to introduce your opinion. Every word or phrase comes with a couple of examples. The lesson is accompanied by an audio file recorded by a native Russian speaker.
Ду́маю, (что)… – I think (that)
- Не ду́маю, что из э́того полу́чится что́-то хоро́шее.
I don’t think that something good will come out of it. - Я ду́маю, нам лу́чше вы́ехать пора́ньше, что́бы не стоя́ть в про́бках.
I think we better leave early so we don’t stand in traffic jams.
По-мо́ему,… – In my opinion
- По-мо́ему, вы ошиба́етесь.
In my opinion, you are mistaken. - По-мо́ему, мы зря сюда́ пришли́.
In my opinion, we should not have come here.
Мне ка́жется, что… – It seems to me that…
- Мне ка́жется, что э́ти брю́ки тебя́ полня́т.
It seems to me that these pants make you look fat. - Мне ка́жется, ско́ро пойдёт дождь.
It seems to me that it will rain soon. - Мне ка́жется, ты ошиба́ешься на его́ счёт.
I think you’re mistaken about him.
Полага́ю, … – I suppose
- Полага́ю, э́то ма́ксимум, что они́ мо́гут нам предложи́ть. Вряд ли мо́жно ожида́ть от них бо́льшего.
I suppose this is the maximum that they can offer us. We can hardly expect more from them. - Вы ду́маете, что я прав? – Полага́ю, что да.
Do you think I’m right? – I suppose yes.
На мой взгляд… – In my opinion
- На мой взгляд, э́то са́мая лу́чшая кни́га всех времён и наро́дов.
In my opinion, this is the best book of all times and nations. - На мой взгляд, э́то мо́жно бы́ло сде́лать лу́чше.
In my opinion, it could be done better.
По мо́ему мне́нию… – In my opinion
- По мо́ему мне́нию, врача́м и учителя́м должны́ плати́ть гора́здо бо́льше, чем пла́тят сейча́с.
In my opinion, doctors and teachers should be paid pay much more than they are paid now. - По мо́ему мне́нию, э́то са́мая лу́чшая экраниза́ция Шекспира за после́дние го́ды.
In my opinion, this is the best screen adaptation of Shakespeare in recent years.
Я бы сказа́л(а)… – I would say
- Я бы сказа́ла, что э́то нече́стно.
I would say that it’s not fair. - Я бы сказа́ла, что ва́ши пережива́ния безоснова́тельны.
I would say that your worries are groundless.
На ва́шем (твоём, его́ и т.д.) ме́стe – In your (his, etc.) place, if I were you (him, etc.)
- На ва́шем ме́сте я бы приняла́ э́то предложе́ние.
If I were you, I would accept that offer. - Я бы не ста́ла так поступа́ть, будь я на твоём ме́сте.
I would not do that if I were you. - На его́ ме́сте я бы хороше́нько поду́мала, пре́жде чем приня́ть реше́ние.
In his place, I would have thought carefully before taking a decision.
Я счита́ю, (что) … – I believe (that), I think (that)
- Я счита́ю, что руково́дство компа́нии должно́ быть бли́же к сотру́дникам.
I believe that the company’s management should be closer to the employees. - Я счита́ю нева́жно, полу́чится у нас и́ли нет, гла́вное – попро́бовать.
I think it does not matter if we succed or not, the most important is to try.
